Fees, renewal and key rules

  • Application fee (non-refundable): contractor $100, journeyman $75.
  • Renewal fees: apprentice $20, journeyman $50, contractor $75.
  • The contractor license is renewed every two years (biennial) under 528 CMR 11.04. Renewal notices go out by email and mail 60 days before expiration. We did not find a single fixed statewide expiration date, so none is listed.
  • Contractor renewal requires a liability insurance certificate including completed operations coverage of at least $500,000 per occurrence, naming the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Division of Occupational Licensure as certificate holder.
  • If the license holder leaves a contractor, the contractor and license holder must notify the Division within 30 days, and the contractor has 60 days to name another license holder.
  • Apprentice renewals: Mass.gov says apprentices are limited to two renewals unless the Bureau approves more; the regulation text says three. Check with the Division.

Town and fire marshal reporting

Some towns require inspection reports to be filed online. Example: the Town of Mansfield requires all sprinkler and fire alarm inspection, testing and maintenance reports to be uploaded to The Compliance Engine, with bylaw penalties of $100, $200 and $300 for first, second and later offenses (Town of Mansfield). A town-by-town directory is being researched. The statewide fire code is 527 CMR 1.00.
